THE REEL
These light fixtures were created using vintage 35mm film reels that have been used at the Empire Theatre on Block Island, Rhode Island. Similar reels were used in movie theatres around the world until recently, now that theaters are using digital projectors, these film reels are obsolete. Thanks to LED light technology, these reels have been brought back to life and repurposed into functional, contemporary light fixtures.
.
Each fixture is unique in that no Reel Light features the same movie trailer footage. All film strips illuminate differently dependent on the colors and shapes in the film strip making it one of a kind. The lights highlight popular movie trailers, shots have been carefully spliced together to feature recognizable scenes from the film. These may include actors and the title of the movie. The four gimbaled and dimmable LED down lights are modern and sophisticated.

“I want to utilize what already exists instead of allowing the wonderful objects of the pre-digital world to disappear. By reinventing these obsolete film reels into something functional and aesthetically pleasing, I am giving new purpose to a part of movie history that has brought audiences together for years; I want to redefine this idea and captivate the audience in a new way."
